Hélène Mogensen de Monléon is French-Italian and lives currently in Denmark. She attended Art Schools in Rome and Lyon, where she began her artistic career by painting. Later on she discovered that the camera lens was the most genuine way to express her feelings, an aesthetic sensibility, and tell stories.
My approach to photography is both emotional and aesthetic. I seek the soul behind the mundane, the “little thing” which makes a moment unique. My intent is to unveil the feelings and stories behind the obvious and find the right composition to portray them. On the aesthetic level I look for unexpected elegance and try to reveal the hidden beauty of everyday life. Growing up in the south of Europe, I was used to feeling intensely and immediately the mood of a scene, in which the colours, sounds, fragrances and light blend together in an exuberant cocktail. Here in Denmark, the nuances are softer and more subtle, and I had to adapt my eyes and sensibility to these new fragrances, sounds and sensations before I could express them in my photographs. However, my work is still deeply influenced by my southern European background, in the way I play with light, colours and mood, sometimes beyond the pale, bending conventional rules.
